GTAC has prepared an innovative series of student tasks for the classroom that allow students to employ bioinformatics tools and databases to solve problems. These resources have been developed to consolidate student understanding of key concepts in senior biology and chemistry studies. Topics include; protein structure and function, rational drug design, cellular respiration and the electron transport chain, signal transduction pathways molecular genetics and molecular homology in the determination of evolutionary relationships. Tasks have also been prepared to expose and engage middle year’s students in contemporary biology.

Cells-On-Line

Cells-On Line contains a collection of specially prepared worksheets, for use in the classroom, that explore cell structure and function and microscopy techniques. Many of the images contained in these worksheets have been captured on our Nikon-TC 2000-U fluorescence teaching microscope. In addition, students can use the website link to the microscope to download images captured from their own slides prepared during their laboratory workshops at GTAC.

Gene Issues

Applications of genetic research have the potential to improve the wellbeing of individuals. However, this research may also raise social and ethical issues that will affect individuals, families and society as a whole. ‘Gene Issues’ provides teachers with a series of hypothetical scenarios that explore the four basic principles of medical ethics with their students. This material is relevant to school assessed coursework in Unit 4 VCE Biology and can be modified as an interdisciplinary learning task in VELS.

DNAi DVD

The DNAi DVD was produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary (2003) of the discovery of the structure of DNA by Watson and Crick. The DVD contains over four hours of material that charts the evolution of DNA Science and the arrival of the Post-Genomic Era. This DVD is the essential teaching tool for DNA Science in the classroom. It contains the stunning award winning animations by Drew Berry of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI). GTAC distributes, on request, the DNAi DVD to teachers in Australian schools on behalf of WEHI.
