UNIT 1 EXPLORING CELL STRUCTURE
GTAC Student Program VCE 101
Laboratory Workshop - School Groups Only
(Available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)
Our Laboratory Workshop offers Unit 1 VCE Biology students a unique opportunity to work in small groups with their own young research scientist as “mentor”. The learning environment is highly structured to ensure student participation and to facilitate dialogue. Students use research quality equipment, in a state of the art teaching laboratory. The pre-laboratory lecture supports student learning by introducing them to the biological concepts involved in the laboratory work and supports the consolidation of concepts in Unit 1 Biology.
Students are introduced to the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Laboratory work will include the opportunity to explore advanced microscopy: live cell imaging and various staining techniques such as gram staining and fluorescent tagging. Students will be able to identify specific organelles, note their location and discuss their function in the cell.
