UNIT 3 VCE BIOLOGY CHEMICAL SIGNALLING

GTAC Student Program VCE 302
Laboratory Workshop - School Groups Only

(Available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

Our Laboratory Workshop offers Unit 3 VCE Biology students a unique opportunity to work in small groups with their own young research scientist as “mentor”. The learning environment is highly structured to ensure student participation and to facilitate dialogue. Students use research quality equipment, in a state of the art teaching laboratory. The pre-laboratory lecture supports student learning by introducing them to the biological concepts involved in the laboratory work and supports the consolidation of concepts in Unit 3 Biology.

Two Tasks – One Sac – Your Choice!

This program is new for 2006. A lecture introduces students to the nature of chemical signaling in the context of the stimulus response model. The signal transduction pathway for a cell is explained. Students carry out two tasks. In one task students make observations of the effect of various chemical factors on bacterial growth, including antibiotics, oxygen and selected nutrients. In the other task students use plant tissue cultures to examine the effects of auxin and cytokinin on root and shoot development and explore the effect of gibberellic acid on the germination of barley seeds. Data is collected and presented in graphical form.
