UNIT 4 VCE BIOLOGY “DNA
MANIPULATION” SAC Task
GTAC Student Program VCE 401 Laboratory Workshop
School Groups Only
DNA Manipulation - School Assessed Coursework 2008
(Available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)
Our Laboratory Workshop offers Unit 4
VCE Biology students an unique opportunity to work in
small groups with their own young research scientist
as “mentor”. The learning environment is
highly structured to ensure student participation and
to facilitate dialogue. Students use research quality
equipment, in a state of the art teaching laboratory.
The pre-laboratory lecture supports student learning
by introducing them to the biological concepts involved
in the laboratory work and supports the consolidation
of concepts in Unit 4 Biology. Students perform two
tasks, collect, present and interpret data. The SAC
can be completed in a single class session by asking
students a series of questions based on the two tasks.
| 09.30 – 09.40 |
Arrival
and Registration
Students deposit school bags in cloakroom |
| 09.40 – 10.10 |
Students
are shown a short film “ DNA – The Secret
of Life”
This film presents a comprehensive overview of the
structure and function of DNA and outlines the Central
Dogma of Modern Biology. The film features award
winning molecular animations created by Drew Berry. |
| 10.15 – 10.55 |
Pre-Laboratory
Lecture
A GTAC Education Officer outlines the tasks and
their relevance to Unit 4 Biology is explained. |
| 10.55 – 11.15 |
Break |
| 11.15 – 13.00 |
Task
1: Students are introduced to the micropipettor
and use three different restriction enzymes to
cut Lambda DNA. The fragments are sorted using
gel electrophoresis and visualised.
Students interpret the gel print and construct
a graph that is used to determine the size of
various DNA fragments.
Task 2:
Students transform bacteria using a recombinant
plasmid and interpret the experimental results.
This task gives students insights into experimental
design and basic microbiological techniques. |
| 13.00 – 14.00 |
Lunch:
University of Melbourne Campus
Home school supervision |
| 14.00 – 14.45 |
Students complete laboratory
tasks and interpret results |
| 14.45 – 14.50 |
