TEACHER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROGRAM
BIOLOGY & SCIENCE TEACHERS
Thursday 11th December 2008
GTAC is proud to present this unique program in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology & Immunology, at The University of Melbourne.
“The Bairnsdale Ulcer”
Mycobacterium ulcerans in our own backyard!
A detective story for the science and biology classroom!
This lecture series provides science and biology teachers with background information and resource material on how a causative agent for an infectious disease is investigated. In unravelling this story, students learn about the work of the microbiologist and epidemiologist. Leading researchers talk about discovery, identification, transmission and pathology, to how strategies are developed to manage and control disease. The case study is based upon a local disease issue involving the bacterial pathogen Mycobacterium ulcerans. The bacterium first “appeared” in Australia, in Bairnsdale in the 1940s. Now outbreaks are associated with central coastal Victoria including popular holiday locations such as Cowes on Phillip Island, St Leonards and Point Lonsdale. Most people are aware of the diseases tuberculosis and, to a lesser extent, leprosy. Both these diseases are caused by a Mycobacterium. Now we have Mycobacterium in our back yard!
