GTAC resources of the month – August

Each month we will be featuring a number of GTAC VCE Biology resources that are freely available for teachers and students. These resources are great to use as learning and/or revision tasks.

VCE Biology Unit 2

Application and emerging issues of cloning in agriculture

Students explore the transmission of the genome through asexual reproduction. They then investigate issues that may arise when genetic engineering techniques are used to produce Genetically Modified Organisms. Click here to view this resource.

Exploring fertility and assisted reproductive technologies

Two online courses designed to introduce students to issues surrounding fertility and the use of assisted reproductive technologies to support Outcome 3 AOS 3. Click here for more information on this resource.

Meiosis and oocyte activity

An activity linking the stages of meiosis to the stages in oocyte development. Students place diagrams and descriptions of the meiotic stages in sequence and match that to stages in oocyte development. Click here to view this resource.

VCE Biology Unit 4

Models of human evolution

An online course in which students use fossil evidence to construct and critique models of human evolution. Click here for more information on this resource.

Polymerase Chain Reaction

A short online course in which students use digital models and animations to explore the steps in the DNA manipulation technique Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Click here for more information about this resource.

Gel Electrophoresis

A short online course in which students use digital models and animations to explore the DNA manipulation technique gel electrophoresis. Click here for more information about this resource.

Rational Drug Design

An online course in which students follow in the footsteps of an Australian team of scientists who applied the process of Rational Drug Design to develop a new drug (Relenza) to treat and prevent influenza infections. Click here for more information about this resource.

Using biotechnology to diagnose Human Papillomavirus infections

Students apply their understanding of DNA structure to demonstrate the processes underpinning a restriction digest and gel electrophoresis. This resource has been designed as a sample SAC task for Unit 4, Outcome 2. Click here for more information and to view this resource.
